Free Troposphere Ozone and Carbon Monoxide over the North Atlantic for 2001-2011

چکیده
In situ measurements of carbon monoxide (CO) and ozone (O 3) at the Pico Mountain Observatory (PMO) located in the Azores, Portugal, are analyzed together with results from an atmospheric chemical transport model (GEOS-Chem) and satellite remote sensing data (AIRS (Atmospheric Infrared Sounder) for CO, and TES (Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer) for O 3) to examine the evolution of free-troposphere CO and O 3 over the North Atlantic for 2001– 2011. GEOS-Chem captured the seasonal cycles for CO and O 3 well but significantly underestimated the mixing ratios of CO, particularly in spring. Statistically significant (using a significance level of 0.05) decreasing trends were found for both CO and O 3 based on harmonic regression analysis of the measurement data. The best estimates of the possible trends for CO and O 3 measurements are −0.31 ± 0.30 (2-σ) ppbv yr −1 and −0.21 ± 0.11 (2-σ) ppbv yr −1 , respectively. Similar decreasing trends for both species were obtained with GEOS-Chem simulation results. The most important factor contributing to the decreases in CO and O 3 at PMO over the past decade is the decline in anthropogenic emissions from North America, which more than compensate for the impacts from increasing Asian emissions. It is likely that climate change in the past decade has also affected the intercontinental transport of O 3 .

متن کاملExport of north american ozone pollution to the north atlantic ocean.
Measurement of the levels of ozone and carbon monoxide (a tracer of anthropogenic pollution) at three surface sites on the Atlantic coast of Canada allow the estimation of the amount of ozone photochemically produced from anthropogenic precursors over North America and transported to the lower troposphere over the temperate North Atlantic Ocean. This amount is greater than that injected from th...
متن کاملA Modeling Study of the Export Pathways of Pollution from Europe: Seasonal and Interannual Variations (1987-1997)
We present a study of the seasonal and interannual variations of the export pathways of pollution from Europe for eleven years, 1987-1997, using the GEOS-CHEM model of 3-d trace gas/aerosol chemistry and transport. The dominant export pathways in winter are advection to i. the middle and high latitudes of the North Atlantic Ocean, including the European Arctic; ii. Russia and the Russian Arctic...
متن کاملChemical characteristics assigned to trajectory clusters during the MINOS campaign
During the Mediterranean Intensive Oxidant Study (MINOS) in August 2001 a total of 14 measurement flights were performed with the DLR Falcon jet aircraft from Heraklion, Crete. One objective of this campaign was to investigate the role of long-range transport of pollutants into the Mediterranean area. An analysis of 5-day back trajectories indicates that in the lower troposphere (0–4 km) air ma...
متن کاملLong-range transport to Europe: Seasonal variations and implications for the European ozone budget
[1] We use a chemical transport model (GEOS-CHEM) to quantify the contribution of long-range transported pollution to the European ozone (O3) budget for the year 1997. The model reproduces the main features observed over Europe for O3, carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxides, as well as two events of enhanced O3 of North American origin over the eastern North Atlantic and over Europe. North Ameri...
